What to Look For in Dog Food
Things that actually matter
AAFCO statement. Look for "formulated to meet AAFCO standards" or "feeding trials using AAFCO procedures." This ensures complete and balanced nutrition. It's a minimum requirement, not a gold star.
Company transparency. Does the brand employ board-certified veterinary nutritionists? Do they conduct feeding trials? Do they own their manufacturing facilities? If a company can't answer these questions, be skeptical.
Protein source and quality. First ingredient should be a named meat (chicken, beef, salmon) or meat meal (chicken meal). Avoid generic terms like "poultry" or "meat by-products." Meal is concentrated protein — it's not inferior to whole meat.
Your dog's individual response. The best food is the one your dog thrives on. Good signs: consistent energy, healthy weight, shiny coat, small firm stools. Bad signs: chronic loose stools, vomiting, excessive gas, dull coat, itching.
Things that sound good but don't matter much
"Grain-free" as default. Unless your dog has a diagnosed grain allergy (rare), grains aren't harmful. The FDA is investigating links between grain-free diets and DCM (heart disease). Rice, oats, and barley are nutritious.
"Human-grade" ingredients. This is marketing. AAFCO doesn't recognize "human-grade" for pet food. What matters is digestibility and nutritional completeness, not whether you'd eat it.
Exotic proteins. Kangaroo, bison, venison — these are only necessary for dogs with common protein allergies. For most dogs, chicken or beef is fine and cheaper.
Price equals quality. Some $6/lb boutique brands are nutritionally inferior to $2/lb Pro Plan. Science matters more than price tag.
