What to Look For in Pillows

Sleep position determines everything

Your sleep position dictates what pillow you need. Get this wrong and even a $200 pillow won't help:

Side sleepers (most common): Need high loft (5-7 inches) to fill the space between shoulder and head. Too low and your neck bends down; too high and it bends up. Both cause pain. Look for firm or medium-firm pillows that don't compress. The Coop Eden (adjusted to full loft) or Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud work perfectly.

Back sleepers: Need medium loft (4-5 inches) to support the natural neck curve without pushing the head forward. Medium firmness is ideal. The Coop Eden (with some fill removed) or Beckham Hotel Collection hit this sweet spot.

Stomach sleepers: Need low loft (3-4 inches) to prevent neck hyperextension. Soft pillows work best. This is the hardest position to find good pillows for. The Coop Eden with most fill removed is your best bet, or consider sleeping without a pillow and putting one under your hips instead.

Combination sleepers: Adjustable pillows like the Coop Eden are essential. You need medium loft that works for multiple positions.

Fill types explained

Memory foam (solid): Best for side sleepers who need consistent support. Contours to neck shape, maintains loft all night, but runs warm. Tempur-Pedic is the gold standard.

Shredded memory foam: More breathable than solid foam, adjustable (you can add/remove fill), and less "sinking in" feeling. Coop Eden uses this. Trade-off: needs occasional fluffing.

Down alternative (polyester): Soft, affordable, machine washable. Loses loft over time (6-12 months). Good for budget buyers or guest rooms. Beckham Hotel Collection is the best example.

Latex: Responsive (bounces back quickly), cooling, maintains loft for years. Firmer feel than memory foam. Purple Harmony's latex core is excellent for hot sleepers who want support.

Down/feathers (not covered here): Traditional luxury feel, but expensive ($150-400), requires fluffing, and many people have allergies. Modern synthetics perform as well for less money.

Loft vs firmness (they're different)

Loft = height of the pillow. Firmness = how much it compresses under weight. You need to match both to your sleep position:

• High loft + firm: Side sleepers with broad shoulders
• High loft + soft: Side sleepers with narrow shoulders (will compress to medium)
• Medium loft + medium firm: Back sleepers (most common)
• Low loft + soft: Stomach sleepers

The problem: You can't tell loft or firmness from online shopping. This is why trial periods matter. Order from retailers that allow 30-90 day returns, test for at least a week (your neck needs time to adjust), and return if it doesn't work.

Cooling features (do they work?)

Hot sleeping is real, and pillow choice affects it:

What actually helps:

• Breathable fill materials: Shredded foam > solid foam. Latex > memory foam. Purple's GelFlex Grid is best-in-class.
• Phase-change covers: Materials that absorb heat temporarily. These work but effects fade after 2-3 hours.
• Perforated foam: Holes in solid foam improve airflow moderately.

What's marketing nonsense:

• "Cooling gel" infused in memory foam: Barely makes a difference. The foam's density matters more than gel infusion.
• "Bamboo" covers: Usually rayon derived from bamboo. Breathability is similar to cotton. Not magic.
• Ice silk / cooling fiber / cold touch: Feels cool for 10-15 minutes, then reaches body temperature.

Bottom line: For hot sleepers, prioritize latex or shredded foam fill over solid memory foam, regardless of marketing claims. The Purple Harmony is the coolest pillow we tested.

Machine washability

Pillows get gross. You're sleeping on them 7-8 hours per night, breathing, sweating, drooling. Washability matters:

• Fully machine washable (cover + fill): Coop Eden, most down alternatives like Beckham. Wash every 3-4 months.
• Cover washable only: Purple Harmony, most solid foam pillows. Wash cover monthly, spot-clean foam as needed.
• Not washable: Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud, cheap memory foam. Use a pillow protector (wash that weekly) and spot-clean the pillow.

Pro tip: Use a pillow protector regardless. $15 zippered protectors (not pillow cases — those are decorative) act as a barrier against sweat, oils, and allergens. Wash weekly. This extends pillow life by 2-3 years.

Trial periods and returns

You can't know if a pillow works until you sleep on it for a week. Your neck needs time to adjust (switching pillows often causes 2-3 nights of mild discomfort even if the new one is better). Look for:

• 90-100 night trials: Coop Eden, Tempur-Pedic, Purple. These are real trials — sleep on it for three months, return if it doesn't work.
• 30-day Amazon returns: Standard for most pillows. Enough time to test properly.
• No trial period: Avoid unless it's a budget pick like Beckham where you're okay with the risk.

Return reality check: Pillows with trials have 15-25% return rates. This is normal. Don't feel bad about returning — these companies build return costs into pricing.

How long should a pillow last?

Replacement timelines by fill type:

• Down alternative (polyester): 6-12 months before noticeable flattening. Replace annually.
• Shredded memory foam: 2-3 years before loft loss becomes significant.
• Solid memory foam: 3-5 years. High-quality like Tempur-Pedic lasts 5+ years.
• Latex: 5-7 years. Most durable fill type.

Reality: Most people keep pillows too long. If you wake up with neck pain, or your pillow doesn't bounce back when you fold it in half, replace it. Cost per night math makes even $179 Purple Harmony reasonable (49 cents/night over 5 years).

Products We Considered

Casper Original Pillow: Solid performer with a pillow-in-pillow design (soft outer, supportive inner). Didn't make our list because the Coop Eden offers better adjustability at the same $69 price point.

Brooklinen Down Alternative Pillow: Beautiful construction and nice materials, but $59 for a down alternative that lasts 6-12 months is hard to justify when Beckham is $14.50/pillow and performs similarly.

Layla Kapok Pillow: Copper-infused memory foam with good cooling properties. We didn't include it because the Purple Harmony cools better and the $129 price point is competitive with Tempur-Pedic, which has better neck support.

MyPillow: Heavily advertised, but user consensus on r/Mattress is negative. Common complaints: loses loft quickly, customer service issues, aggressive marketing feels scammy. Can't recommend based on real user feedback.

Nest Bedding Easy Breather Pillow: Great adjustable design and legitimately cooling. Didn't make the cut because it's $135 (vs Coop Eden's $79) without clear performance advantages.
