The Best Mattresses
Our Picks
Helix Midnight Luxe
The mattress r/Mattress recommends most often for couples and combination sleepers. Zoned lumbar support, plush pillow top, and a firmness level (medium) that works for most body types and sleep positions.
What we like
- Zoned support — firmer in the middle, softer at shoulders/hips
- Hybrid coil + foam = good cooling and responsiveness
- Works for side, back, and combination sleepers
- 15-year warranty, 100-night trial
What we don't
- $1,400 queen is mid-premium pricing
- Edge support could be better
- Not ideal for stomach sleepers (too soft)

|---|---|
| Firmness | Medium (5-6/10) |
| Height | 14" |
| Trial | 100 nights |
| Price (Queen) | $1,400 |
Allswell Luxe
A hybrid mattress at foam mattress prices. Sold at Walmart, made by the same company that makes high-end brands. The r/Mattress community calls it the best budget option that doesn't feel budget.
What we like
- $500 queen with hybrid coil construction
- Copper-infused foam for cooling
- Medium-firm works for most sleepers
- 100-night trial even at this price
What we don't
- Thinner than premium options (12")
- 10-year warranty (vs 15 on premium)
- Not available for in-store testing
| Type | Hybrid (coils + foam) |
|---|---|

Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt
When you want the best pressure relief money can buy. Tempur's proprietary foam is still unmatched for contouring and motion isolation. Expensive, but many owners keep them 10+ years.
What we like
- Best-in-class pressure relief for side sleepers
- Near-perfect motion isolation for couples
- Durable — maintains shape for 10+ years
- 10-year full warranty
What we don't
- $2,900 queen is premium pricing
- Sleeps warmer than hybrids
- Slow response — hard to move around on

What to Look For
What actually matters
Your sleep position. Side sleepers need softer mattresses for shoulder/hip pressure relief. Back sleepers need medium firmness for spinal alignment. Stomach sleepers need firm to prevent back strain.
Hybrid vs. all-foam. Hybrids (coils + foam) sleep cooler and have better edge support. All-foam offers better motion isolation and pressure relief. Neither is objectively better.
Trial period length. You can't tell if a mattress works in a showroom. You need to sleep on it for 2-4 weeks. Avoid brands with short trials or return fees.
What matters less
Cooling gels and infusions. Marketing claims about cooling copper/gel/graphite show minimal measurable difference. Hybrid coils matter more for airflow than foam additives.
Luxury materials. "Organic" and "natural latex" matter for environmental reasons, but don't necessarily sleep better than quality synthetic materials.
Products We Considered
Purple Hybrid Premier: Unique grid technology, but polarizing — some love it, others find it too strange. The Helix is a safer choice for most.
Casper Original: Was innovative, now just average. The Allswell Luxe beats it at half the price.
Saatva Classic: Excellent innerspring option, but similar price to Helix with less pressure relief. Better for those who prefer traditional innerspring feel.
Our Methodology
Mattress preferences are personal. We focus on options with generous trial periods and strong long-term owner satisfaction. Return policies matter because you can't know until you sleep on it.
