What to Look For in a Bed Frame
Things that actually matter
Joinery and connection method. How pieces connect determines if your frame will squeak in 6 months. Japanese joinery (Thuma) and wedge-lock systems (Floyd) stay silent forever. Bolt-together frames will eventually loosen. Metal-on-metal contact points are squeak factories unless you use rubber washers.
Center support beam and legs. Queens and kings absolutely need a center support beam with legs touching the floor. Frames without center support will sag in the middle within a year. Check user reviews for "mattress dips in center" complaints.
Slat spacing and material. Slats should be no more than 3 inches apart (most mattress warranties require this). Wood slats are sturdier than metal mesh. Memory foam mattresses need solid platform or very close slat spacing.
Under-bed clearance. If you need storage, aim for 10"+ clearance. Low-profile frames (5-6") work with drawer storage but won't fit standard bins. Measure your storage needs before buying.
Real assembly time. Manufacturers lie. Add 50% to listed assembly times. "Tool-free" means something with Thuma and Floyd; it's marketing nonsense with most others. Watch user assembly videos on YouTube before buying.
Things that sound good but don't matter much
Weight capacity over 1,000 lbs. Unless you're running a mattress testing facility, you don't need 2,000 lb capacity. Frames that support 700-1,000 lbs are fine for any reasonable use.
"Solid wood" construction. Plywood and engineered wood are often stronger and more stable than solid wood. Thuma's udon wood is repurposed/compressed. Floyd's birch plywood is excellent. Don't fetishize solid wood.
Integrated box spring replacement. This is just slats. It's not a special feature — it's the standard for platform beds.
Products We Considered
IKEA MALM: The classic budget choice at $179. We didn't include it because particle board construction doesn't survive moves well, and newer users report quality degradation compared to pre-2020 versions.
