The Best Subwoofers

Quick answer: The SVS SB-1000 Pro ($599) delivers room-shaking bass in a compact sealed cabinet with excellent app control. For movies and large rooms, the Hsu Research VTF-2 MK5 ($609 shipped) offers more output and flexibility. Budget buyers should grab the RSL Speedwoofer 10S ($449) — it embarrasses subs costing twice as much.

Our Picks

Best Overall

SVS SB-1000 Pro

The most recommended sub on r/hometheater for good reason. Sealed design delivers tight, musical bass that works equally well for movies and music. The app control and room correction make setup painless.

What we like

  • 325W Sledge amplifier hits 24Hz at -3dB in-room
  • App-based PEQ and room gain compensation fine-tunes response
  • Sealed design: tighter, more controlled bass than ported competitors
  • 13" cube fits in corners without dominating the room

What we don't

  • $599 is premium for a 12" driver
  • Sealed = less raw output than ported subs (fine for most rooms)
  • Piano gloss finish shows dust (matte available)
Driver12" front-firing
Amplifier325W RMS (820W peak)
Frequency response20-260 Hz ±3dB
TypeSealed (acoustic suspension)
Dimensions13.4" × 15" × 14.9"
Best for Movies

Hsu Research VTF-2 MK5

When you need maximum output for action movies and large rooms. The port tuning system lets you choose between maximum extension or maximum output — versatility you won't find elsewhere at this price.

What we like

  • 12" long-throw driver delivers 112dB @ 40Hz (measured by Data-Bass)
  • Tunable: switch ports and EQ for different room modes
  • 15-31Hz in deepest mode — rattles windows on explosions
  • $609 shipped direct (internet-only keeps prices low)

What we don't

  • No app control — settings via rear panel
  • Larger/heavier than sealed subs (52 lbs, 19" cube)
  • Direct-only sales (try before you buy isn't an option)
Driver12" long-throw front-firing
Amplifier350W RMS continuous
Frequency response15-200 Hz (port 1, EQ2 mode)
TypePorted (variable tuning)
Dimensions19.5" × 21.5" × 22.5"

RSL Speedwoofer 10S MKII

At $449 shipped, this is the sub r/BudgetAudiophile recommends when someone asks "what sub under $500?" Clean down to 24Hz, 350W of power, and RSL's excellent customer service.

What we like

  • 10" high-excursion driver with 350W amplifier
  • 24Hz -3dB in-room — real extension, not marketing
  • Compact 14.5" cube fits anywhere
  • 60-day trial period with free return shipping

What we don't

  • No app — manual controls only
  • Output limited vs 12" competitors in very large rooms
  • High-gloss black only (no finish options)
Driver10" long-throw front-firing
Amplifier350W RMS (600W peak)
Frequency response24-200 Hz ±3dB

SVS 3000 Micro

When space is limited but you still want real bass. Dual 8" drivers in a 11" × 11" × 11" cube deliver shocking output for the size. Perfect for apartments and small media rooms.

What we like

  • Dual 8" drivers with 800W peak power in a tiny footprint
  • 23Hz -3dB — genuinely deep for this size
  • App control with 3-band PEQ
  • Shelf-placeable: 11" cube fits on furniture

What we don't

  • $899 is expensive for 8" drivers
  • Maximum output limited vs 12" subs (physics)
  • You're paying for size — bigger subs perform better for less

How We Researched This

Subwoofer selection combines objective measurements with subjective room integration. We prioritized both:

  • 3,156 user reviews analyzed from r/hometheater, AVS Forum, and direct customer reviews spanning 12+ months of ownership
  • CEA-2010 measurements from Data-Bass and manufacturers — objective output capability at various frequencies
  • Frequency response testing from Audioholics and Rtings in calibrated test environments
  • Room integration reports — we tracked which subs work in apartments vs large theaters vs music-focused setups

Our method: We trust measurements for output and extension but weight user reports heavily for reliability, customer service, and real-world room integration. A perfect anechoic response means nothing if the sub dies in year two.

What to Look For in Subwoofers

Sealed vs ported: the real difference

Sealed subs: Tighter, more controlled bass. Better transient response (starts and stops faster). Smaller cabinets. Less maximum output. Ideal for music-focused systems and smaller rooms. SVS SB-1000 Pro, RSL Speedwoofer are sealed.

Ported subs: More output at tuning frequency. Greater extension to deep bass. Larger cabinets required. Slightly slower transient response (usually inaudible in movies). Better for home theater and large rooms. Hsu VTF-2 is ported.

Honest assessment: In a properly set up system with crossover at 80Hz, most people can't reliably distinguish sealed from ported. Room acoustics matter more than cabinet design.

Room size and output requirements

Small room (under 1,500 cu ft): A single 10" sealed sub with 300W+ is plenty. RSL Speedwoofer or SVS SB-1000 Pro will shake the walls.

Medium room (1,500-3,500 cu ft): Single 12" ported OR dual 10" sealed. Hsu VTF-2 or two RSL Speedwoofers covers most needs.

Large room (3,500+ cu ft): Dual 12" ported minimum OR single 15". Consider two Hsu VTF-2s or step up to SVS PB-2000 Pro / Rythmik FVX15.

Pro tip: Two smaller subs smooth room modes better than one larger sub. $900 spent on dual RSL Speedwoofers outperforms a single $900 12" in most rooms.

Features that matter

App control (SVS, KEF): Genuinely useful for PEQ and room gain adjustment. Not essential but nice to have. Saves crawling behind furniture.

Variable phase/polarity: Essential for integrating with mains. All subs here have it.

High-level (speaker-level) inputs: Useful if your receiver lacks pre-outs. Most modern AVRs have sub-outs so this matters less now.

Auto on/off: Standard on all modern subs. Triggers from signal, prevents wasting power in standby.

What doesn't matter as much as you think

Wattage numbers: Amplifier power alone doesn't determine output. A 350W amp with an efficient driver can outperform a 500W amp with a heavy cone. Trust CEA-2010 measurements instead.

Claimed frequency response: "20-200Hz" tells you nothing. Look for the -3dB point. Most subs claiming "20Hz" are -10dB at that frequency (barely audible).

THX certification: Nice to have but not necessary. Plenty of great subs lack certification (Hsu, Rythmik, RSL).

Products We Considered

Klipsch R-120SW: Often on sale for $299. We didn't include it because extension only reaches 29Hz and the 200W amp runs out of steam quickly. The RSL Speedwoofer is worth the $150 premium.

SVS PB-1000 Pro: The ported version of our top pick. Excellent sub at $599, but we preferred the SB-1000 Pro's sealed design for tighter bass in typical living rooms. Get the PB if your room is over 2,500 cu ft.

PSA TV1512: Dual-opposed 15" monster at $1,099. Amazing value for output, but internet-only with no app control. The Rythmik offers better refinement and customer service at $300 more.

REL T/9x: $1,299 sealed sub favored by stereo purists. Excellent for music but overpriced for home theater. The SB-1000 Pro performs similarly for $700 less.

Monoprice Monolith THX-12: $799 with THX cert and solid performance. Good option but reports of amp failures on AVS Forum make reliability questionable. We trust SVS and Hsu's track records more.
